The state is bordered by the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir to the north, Himachal Pradesh to the northeast, Chandigarh to the east, Haryana to the south and southeast and Rajasthan to the southwest as well as the Pakistani province of Punjab to the west. The word Punjab is a combination of the Persian words panj (five) and ab (water), thus the (land of) five rivers. The five rivers are the Beas, Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej. The state capital is Chandigarh, which is administered separately as a Union Territory because it is also the capital of Haryana.
